Pull the 318 and install a 6.1, mostly a bolt-in affair. That's what I did on my 63 hardtop Herb 1956 Plymouth Belvedere 361 4-Sale 1959 Coronet 326 Poly 1961 Belvedere Custom Suburban 318 Poly 1962 Dodge Dart 225 Slant Six 4-Sale 1963 Fury 2D/HT 6.1L 1963 Sport Fury Convertible 361 1970 Chrysler 300 Hurst 440 1999 Durango SLT 5.9L 2008 SRT-8 Magnum 6.1L St. Louis, MO. http://1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/mmo42009.html -------Original Message------- From: Donnie Schanz Jr Date: 3/11/2011 10:21:13 AM To: 1962to1965mopars@xxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: I wanna go faster Ive made alot of things go fast in my day, but looking back, I wasted alot of $$$ doing it. Going fast isnt cheap no matter what you are building. You really have to weigh out your options and decide what will cost you the least in the long run and what will give you the best bang for your buck. When it comes to the 318 poly, depending on what your budget is, it might be better to pull it and let it sit, or sell it to start what will get you your goal. Now if you just wanna be the guy who makes a 318 run its best...have at it. I did it with a 409, and was the fist to put a 6-71 on an 09 with the big port heads. I make the blower intake from scratch and welded it. It took 80-100 hours of testing the fit and flowing it on a bench to get it right. Cost...Im not even going to say, but I could have made 400-500 more horsepower for the same $$$ out of a big 540 or 600c.i. Merlin block. I didnt want that. Now if you just wanna run a certain time, scrap the 318 and get the 440 or do the 500 incher using the 400 crank. A light port job and bowl work on a set of 906's and a nice cam and you got 500 hp and tons of torque pretty easy. Machine work and parts, your probably at 4500-5000, and thats a very nice engine. If you can find some nice used parts and do some stuff yourself, it'll be cheaper. Racing junk always has good deals as most of us swap out parts all the time to step up to something bigger or better. I have sold 3 turbos on there the last 3 years for 2/3 to half of what they run new and each had less then 2000 miles on them. Pick what you want to do and then set a plan. Each time I just started without a plan, it just compounded and got out of hand. Doing this, lead to having to do that and doing that lead to have to do something else, and the ball just keeps rollin'. Next thing you know...your broke and only halfway or half-assed to where you were trying to get. Have fun doing it either way, that is what this is all about.
