Re: Overdrive transmission for our big blocks

This diplomat forum entry has basically everything you could want to know about the 500's, 518's - where they come from, which ones you want to do, not do, etc.

Also, I found this site very helpful when I was doing my swap - not to mention they have probably the biggest selection of 518-related stuff I've found. Scroll down.

I'll send more later on the particulars of my install.

Actually please tell us ON list...inquiring minds want to know!!!

I had heard that the A518 install was easier in a B-Body as the tunnel
was larger, and all you basically had to do was put the O/D unit on
the back of a 727 (because of trans mount location), and install a
couple of well placed dents in the floor pan. Someone please correct
me if I'm wrong!

Also, what all are the A518's found in? I was thinking about doing
that swap eventually in the 'vert.

I have a 46RH 518 in my '64 dart. Built by Wayne at APS transmissions.
These things aren't known for being extremely stout in stock form, but they
can be built brutally strong with the right parts and approach. Mine is
behind a 500HP small-block but there are adapters out there to put it behind
a big-block, the folks at Level 10 transmission in NJ used to sell one.

In addition to the OD, most but not all of these are lock-up units and as
such use a very different converter than a reg. 727. I had Dynamic rebuild
and re-do the stall on the stock converter. It still needs more, lots more.

Not sure how it would go on a B-body, but I can tell you that putting one in
an early A-body is not a weekend-type job, and I bet its not too much
different in a B-body.

I also have no idea why in the world you'd go though all that work to put in
the A-500. Unlike, say, a GM-based unit that Keisler sells, the Chrysler
500 and 518 both have massive OD attachments to the back of the main case.
Now think, do you want a 904 or a 727 behind your big block? For about the
same price, and the same amount of hacking/fab work, its a no-brainer.

If you are seriously thinking of putting one in, email me off-list and I
will tell you my experience. The end result is pretty awesome I'll admit...
I have 4:10s and can still cruise without earplugs.
