I have a 46RH 518 in my '64 dart. Built by Wayne at APS transmissions.
These things aren't known for being extremely stout in stock form, but
they can be built brutally strong with the right parts and approach. Mine
is behind a 500HP small-block but there are adapters out there to put it
behind a big-block, the folks at Level 10 transmission in NJ used to sell
one.
In addition to the OD, most but not all of these are lock-up units and as
such use a very different converter than a reg. 727. I had Dynamic
rebuild and re-do the stall on the stock converter. It still needs more,
lots more.
Not sure how it would go on a B-body, but I can tell you that putting one
in an early A-body is not a weekend-type job, and I bet its not too much
different in a B-body.
I also have no idea why in the world you'd go though all that work to put
in the A-500. Unlike, say, a GM-based unit that Keisler sells, the
Chrysler 500 and 518 both have massive OD attachments to the back of the
main case. Now think, do you want a 904 or a 727 behind your big block?
For about the same price, and the same amount of hacking/fab work, its a
no-brainer.
If you are seriously thinking of putting one in, email me off-list and I
will tell you my experience. The end result is pretty awesome I'll
admit... I have 4:10s and can still cruise without earplugs.

been in trucks since the 90's, they fit in the cars but take some floor
mods, overdrive switch can be activated by dimmer swirch or any arrangemet
that is suitable to your driving style, I think if you go to Mopar
Action's
archives you will find a geat article that Ehrenberg wrote about
installing
an overdrive trans into an A-body. I mentioned in an earlier post how I
installed Gear Vendors add on units on T-400's when I worked at Callaway
Corvettes, The G-V's were good units but the trans became quite the piece
when finished, a factory A-518 will probably work a little better. I must
ad
that there are probably other and maybe better units out there, this is
the
first to come to mind, I will climb back into my hole now.

When did Chrysler start putting overdrives on their cars?

seems pretty pricey, I purchased an A-518 from a local yard for $350 and
went through it for about $150, I think the guy who bought it told me
purchased an adapter from JW's in Florida, seems to me the whole deal
could
be done for a bunch less, maybe Don Dulmage will weigh in here, he might
have done this already. The A-518 is nothing more than a 727 whereas an
A-
500 is pretty much a 904, pretty straight forward to rebuild with the
exception of the overdrive and if it isn't broke then don't fix it.

PS. for the stick guys, I have a Jerico for sale
