I am using this glue know that comes in a can with a brush. I like it because it does not get all over like a spray type glue if I am working in a car IE: headliner install. It is used for replacing vinyl mouldings on cars. It is called MOULD FAST Vinyl moulding and emblem cement. You put it on each surface, let it tack off and then stick it together like contact cement. And it sticks good, but you cannot pull off and reset to tighten etc, so you have to reapply the glue to manipulate the vinyl.
But if you want a good all purpose glue that works well, use a spray on glue that is used for vinyl tops. It has alot of good qualities like:
-longer working time, so it is easy to move around -heat does not affect it -it is designed for gluing vinyl to metal -3M makes it in a can still and I buy it from NAPA or my upholstery supplierIt is called 3M 80 Supertrim Adhesive for Rubbers and Vinyls (vinyl top rated glue)
If you use a foam to foam type adhesive, it eats into the foam to make the bond. If used on metal, I find it does not bond well with the metal and when the car gets hot, the glue becomes soft and can pull apart. Vinyl top glue is designed not to do this so IMHO it is a good all purpose adhesive to use on any part of the interior.

In my humble opinion, unless you want something radically different, or go to Tijuana for a mexi job, very few, if any,upholsterers will be able to do it cheaper than say legendary or some otheraftermarket seat company. It is very time consuming to make patterns, buymaterial and build them. If you want to do yourself, make sure you use yourold set as a pattern, cut every piece on the seams with a razor blade, Ithen use an old iron to iron out the old seats, lay them on the new vinyl, cut out and sew together exactly the same. You will need a welting foot to make welts etc. and an industrial machine to sew.Also my 2 cents is alwaysget new foam if possible, you will have a tighter fitting cover that willfill out the corners and believe me you won't believe the different betweenthat and old dead 40 year old foam.For the best bang for your buck, buy the kit and re and re.
