Re[2]: {Chrysler 300} 1963 Chrysler 300 Fuel Gauge replacement

Typically, the gauge responds slowly.  It should not immediately go to full.  For 1963 the voltage limiter is housed in the fuel gauge.  It could be a limiter problem.  JC offers internal solid state conversions for the limiters for an extra fee.  Did you have that done on this gauge?  Also, try it with a warm engine and see if the temp gauge rises and falls in unison with the fuel gauge.  If so, it's the limiter.

Original fuel sender or replacement?  The new ones will never give a correct gauge reading, but should should still be stable for a given amount of fuel.

Hi All,

I replaced the Fuel Gauge with a rebuilt one from Jeff Carter.  I still have some problems.

  1. When turning the key to ON position, the Fuel Gauge (when full) immediately goes to Full position (even slightly past the Full mark)
  2. Then, it slowly moves down to 3/4, then ½,  then eventually back to 7/8

Does this indicate a bad ground or, more likely, perhaps a problem with the Float?   Thank you!

Regards,

Mark Lindahl

Subject: {Chrysler 300} 1963 Chrysler 300 Fuel Gauge replacement/Loose (extra) cream colored wire

Hello All,

I am just ready to check the shop manual, but I thought I would ask the experts!

I replaced by Fuel Gauge with a rebuilt one from Jeff Carter. So far, so good.  The new one moves up and is close to Full.  I did not start the engine, but all looks promising.

I noticed a Cream colored wire (single with push on black connector) that seems to be loose and not connected.  It is near the left side by the shifter.  It looks like the shifter has a dual wire connected at the bottom (assume neutral safety switch or back up lights ?)

If anyone knows where a single cream colored wire goes, please let me know.  I am looking at the shop manual, but that does not always give a clue to the exact location to plug in.  Thank you!

Regards,

Mark Lindahl
