Hi Noel, and group, I got into an accident that totaled car , many years back, in a beautiful white 65 T&C , w gorgeous all light blue interior, when this hose blew in a very fast corner…right into woods. Up on two wheels did not help that, one finger on that amazing power steering from MOPAR. Point is that Noel’s report is very real and valid. I have not paid attention to this on my 300’s ,as much as I should. But this, along with throttle return springs that fail , can cause unbelievable mayhem. As in totaled 300. The springs get nicked, starting a fatigue crack/ break. After that, only a matter of time , …WOT into something, pedal stays on floor. Positive suggestion, We should make new upgrade throttle springs , designed as dual concentric ones like the 426 Street Hemi had, (why was that???? ----) but the right hooks and rates for us, and these hoses ; bending the end fittings to right shape is trivial stuff for hydraulic hose maker, as Bob says. Find a vendor (?Steer and Gear? Or construction equipment hose shop, preferably all Parker ) . More important to have super high quality there (Parker hose and fittings ?) then “exact cheap 1960 rubber with 1960 fluid in it, and that little ring, and the lines on hose” –my .02 . Related, anyone really know (really understand, not BS ) how power steering pumps work? They output the ~ 1000 psi (which duct tape is, er, inadequate for!_) whether loaded or not by work at wheels, yet obviously by actions , they only pull lots of power from belt (squeeek!) when steering needs assist (parking etc) . Thought experiment..if I ran HP hose into another room through a wall, how could pump know if behind the wall is a hydraulic load (steering or motor, or cylinder) or just a relief valve set to open at 1000 psi? So no “work” in room . Flow would be say the same. All that is in pump, to my knowledge, is a relief valve , and from the science of it, no flow at 1000 psi is no HP. (like volts with no amps) I get that. but there IS flow through relief valve ,and pressure is 1000 psi, ready to go. Should be Horse Power . Bothers me. Maybe there is Horse Power thrown away, and fluid gets hot? That would be crazy. Hydraulic excavators do same thing..big noise , open throttle when lifting ,only. This question relates to why hose blew , when highly loaded…in the 65. Just because it is ok when driving nicely does not mean it is ok. Hard turn=boom. I put Toyota power steering (from 80 4wd truck..almost same box shape) in a 57 Ford pickup once, used Ford 292 pump, not sure of either one , correct PSI, it worked fine but fluid got really hot. Put on trans cooler on return, kept it down. Some PS pumps have coolers. Ours do not…? Big “why” here….!! Also FYI, ford had internal filter in return reservoir , under lid, that also apparently functioned as deairator, without it fluid foamed up and out ; no air leaks, just slight foam in return, that kept building . Added external filter fixed that, …why did it do that ?. With duct tape and a quart of P.S. fluid, we cruised the 10 miles home just fine, although the engine compartment was an unholy mess. I called and spoke with either Gary Goers or Bob Hayen - response was that Gary wasn't stocking these hoses anymore, and that they were available more inexpensively through auto parts stores. I picked up a replacement at Napa, and installed it, incorrectly, under the ram. In retrospect, I should have kept the old hose because, by the look of the uniformly deteriorated rubber, it was likely the 53-year old original. So I see Bob J's comment about purchasing Gary's hose in '11, and also that Gary is stocking them now, but don't know if his current inventory is factory original design. I think a lot of the problem is the orientation of both ends into the reducer. you might have to give the line that goes into the pump a gentle tug to get it to not hit the battery tray . but all in all it works! bob
