Re: [FWDLK] Pertronix

The Pertronix system, that requires that a dual-point distributor's breaker plate be installed into the distributor (the breaker plate can be liberated from a funky dualie and installed into a good condition single-point distributor, if necessary)....allows the distributor to be a
simple self-contained drop-in affair.

The spare points distributor, that we should carry for emergency installation, is also a drop- in protocol. A distributor-wrench and a screw driver, and simple wiring-connection instructions
is about all that's necessary to ensure Happy Motoring.

As I mentioned, I was able to score the ONE dual-point distributor which has 28 degrees of mechanical advancement in it, which provides for the best over-all performance (according to Dave Honstad)---6-to-10 degrees of initial advancement, 28 degrees of mechanical advancement and 16 degrees of vacuum advancement = 50-to-54 degrees of total advancement.

That dissie is the one for the 1955 Windsor Poly-4 bbl engine: IAZ 4001E.

The 1956 Windsor is a single-point dissie (needing a dual-point breaker plate to be installed into it from a donor-dualie) but it, too, has 28 degrees of mechanical advancement in it : IBJ 4303A.

The Pertronix will make your car's ignition system maintenance free (until it self-destructs, on some busy freeway at night), but it will not improve the operational performance of your distributor-system
all by itself.

I use a pertonix in my 66 galaxie but I have the mopar elec dist kit in the 59 dodge ( you get the dist, wiring and orange ignition box in the kit) . I've heard of the pertonix units failing, and its hard to pick up a new one at a store if it fails while you are on a trip or something, so I keep a points/condensor backup kit in a small box in the trunk of the ford. If the dodge has an ignition sys issue, any autozone has parts.

Wonderful.....that's why I'm going to be carrying a spare
    points-dissie with Horrie.

BTW, a Pertronix system will make the electrical system
    maintenance free and will
provide (maybe-) a hotter spark than your present coil might be
    providing, but it well
NOT increase a car's ignition/timing performance over whatever
    your present distributor
is providing, in its initial, mechanical and vacuum advancements.

Dave Homstad has confirmed that the dual point 300 distributors
    are woefully under-advanced
and are not good candidates for hot-rodding a car's performance.
