I agree with Jim on this one too. I have an MSD 6AL box with a MSD
distributor in my '58 Fury, kind of a necessity with the monster engine, huge
cam, ect., with points in it the car would go through spark plugs in two weeks
(fouling), with the MSD and platinum plugs I get several years out of a set of
plugs. I have an MP electronic ignition in my '57 Savoy and it runs good,
doesn't foul plugs but both have left me standed, as Jim said without warning. I
left the points in the 318 in my '27 Ford and when I redo my '57 (I'm afraid to
use the word "restore" with this crowd after the last discussion) I'm putting in
a points distributor just for the reliability I've also noticed that the MP
distributors have a really strange advance curve( at least the last one I bought
15 years ago), there is a lot of fine tuning with springs and the adjustable
vacuum advance, my friend fried his '63 318 by putting one in and just setting
the timing and vacuum advance, after an engine rebuild they had to modify the
centrifugal advance slots, change springs, ect. Be careful if you buy
one. .

on the topic of electronic ignition, i will be one of the first to
promote the benefits of using it, better dwell characteristics, all-weather
starting, stronger spark, some even have a multiple spark or capacitative
discharge spark [MSD, stock ford]
BUT i will also be the first to note that out of the performance world,
on a stock car or driver, points will never leave you stranded... electronic
ignitions, whether factory or aftermarket, made in china or USA... give no
warning, one morning or in the middle of the freeway... they fail...
points will give warning signs, a misfire, a little weak spark.... and all you
need to do is pop the cap, run your sleeve end, a matchbook, or a piece of
somewhat clean debris on the side of the road through the gap.. guess
what? you're getting home with nothing but a few moments invested.
i was electronic-crazed for a long time, still am for many apps, but i
lean towards points in my so-equipped long haul vehicles... the stock
mopar ECUs prove best for longevity [the blue emissions-years ones with poor
dwell]... the orange boxes from MP dont last so well... and its hit-or-miss
with KEM or WELLS from the auto suppliers are ok.... i use them for my
flamethrower units mostly.
the best bet is fire and msd 6A off a set of points- you get the CD
ignition, but the day the box fails, just jump the neg lead off the points to
the - coil terminal, and once again, you'll get home.
same goes for generators over alternators- i nad to "turn" the
commutator on my 49 kaiser 40min from home on the side of the road with a pen-
charged for a month or so afterward. and if the regulator goes- pop the
cover and wedge the field and arm contacts- may over charge a little, but
you'll get home!

I use a pertonix in my
66 galaxie but I have the mopar elec dist kit in the 59 dodge ( you get the
dist, wiring and orange ignition box in the kit) . I've heard of the
pertonix units failing, and its hard to pick up a new one at a store if it
fails while you are on a trip or something, so I keep a points/condensor
backup kit in a small box in the trunk of the ford. If the dodge has an
ignition sys issue, any autozone has parts.

Wonderful.....that's why I'm going to be carrying a
spare points-dissie with Horrie.
BTW, a Pertronix system will make
the electrical system maintenance free and will provide (maybe-) a hotter
spark than your present coil might be providing, but it well NOT increase
a car's ignition/timing performance over whatever your present
distributor is providing, in its initial, mechanical and vacuum
advancements.
Dave Homstad has confirmed that the dual point 300
distributors are woefully under-advanced and are not good candidates for
hot-rodding a car's performance.
