In 1988 Chrysler introduced the Dynasty and New Yorker (C body) on a 104" wheelbase - basically a K car with four more inches in the rear seat area. Two years later the Fifth Avenue and Imperial were introduced - the Y body on a 109" wheelbase, this time the C body with five more inches for the rear seat passengers. So the 1990-93 Imperials were based on the New Yorker (and Dynasty) which were derived from the Reliant and Aries. Actually, after 1933 only the 1957-66 Imperials did not share body parts with any other Chrysler model. The first 'non-Chrysler' Imperials, the 1955 and 1956 models, shared their bodies wth Chrysler and DeSoto. The 1937 to 1939 and 1950 to 1952 Chrysler Imperials shared their bodies with Chrysler, DeSoto and Dodge! To really add insult to injury, in some peoples minds, the 1937-38 Custom Imperial and 1940 Crown Imperial used the same long wheelbase body as the Chrysler six, DeSoto, Dodge and Plymouth. Which is not really that bad. That is how car companies can afford to tool and build multiple car lines - by sharing bodies, engines, etc. Even the Cadillac deVille shared its body with its lesser siblings. Starting in 1959 the Cadillac body was shared with the Buick Electra 225 (it was 225" long that year) while the basic body structure and cowl was shared with all GM cars, including the Chevrolet Biscayne. Outside of the V-16 models, the 1938-41 Cadillac 60 Special and the pre-1950 series 75, Cadillac has been sharing bodies with other GM car lines since 1936. Lincoln has been sharing body structues since the 1960's - the 1968 Continental Mark III used the Thunderbird body while the full-size Continental (later Town Sedan) was based on the LTD/Marquis body starting in 1970. By then even Ford could not continue to tool a unique body for the Lincoln.
