I noticed a month or so ago, when HOT ROD did its issue devoted to the new hemi ( yes one of a few things that actually did get new and improved for the most part ) they had a reference to an engine built around 1914 I believe that was a hemi, though it may just have been a drawing. I know that some aircraft manufacturers had them going on in the earliest days of the radial engines. Since I brought up the subject with my earlier post, I will do whatever I can to substantiate it.
