Mo, I was wondering the same thing. On either bent tubes or gear adjustments.  Pinion angle could also cause a bind.

  Where the gears broke apart at the corners, I would have thought more of the gear tooth would have broke off, the last 8 3/4 ring gear I saw that had broken was in a van that had been towing a heavy trailer, and the 5 teeth that had broke were 70 pct gone.
