Re: Steering box rebuild.

The issue on the steering is Mopar Action Octobober 2010. Hard to believe its been that long already! There is a pic of Don Carltons 71 Motown Missle Challenger on the cover. Page 32, they did a whole series on front end improvements , covering all aspects of the front end workings.  I had to find a few pumps, some had no shims at all. You need around 120 thousands to make a difference you can feel. Maybe a brass wassher from a brake hose will work as a shim?  The spring is very stiff to compress. I tried .060 no real difference,.120 big difference.  Did this one on the car, little messy as the fluid ran down to the drip pan , but simple to do otherwise.  If you guys dont get this mag you should, Mopar Muscle  is a joke, I personally would rather read MCGs for sale adds than MM tech articles that leave me wondering what are they thinking. Besides tech articles, MA is a well written mag. Just my irrelivent thoughts.

Very interesting!

Do a Google search on:

mopar action lower pressure on power steering pump

You will find a pdf of the article.  I have been thinking about going
to a manual box because of the power steering lack of road feel and
too sensitive, this sounds like something worth trying.

Lowering the pressure in the pump brings a lot of road feel to the steering system.   You did look at the rest of the frontend? When I rebuilt mine in the truck I actually had to learn how to drive it again.  The box may not be that worn, the rest or even just one piece will create a lot of slop.
