Hi Don,I use two hammers-one very large ( anvil function ) and one 2# hammer. Loosen nut ,sandwich stud area of piece to be separated between hammers and pound .These parts are forged steel so you can't hurt them. You are working perpendicular to the stud. Usually very few blows are necessary. Good luck!

Then there's the U type joint separator with the screw in bolt - seems to twist off the cross link more times than not.
