The components need to be compatible. For example I used the Frank Lupo 3000 stall converter on my 318poly w/ dual quads, cam, etc.. I still had the original 2:76 rear though. It was a dog and would hardly get out of it's own way. The gas mileage was about 4 or 5 mpg. Then I put in a GTX rear end w/3:91's. Day and night difference!!! Plus the mileage almost doubled and I did adjust for the speedo inaccuracy. The best bet is to determine your desires and contact the right people.
