I must admit we didnt check whether the wick (didnt even look for it!) 
was lubed before we refitted the restored cluster - I'd rather hoped 
that Auto Instruments would have done that as part of the rebuild 
service that they do!
In fact, the one that's in the car now (& still not perfect) is a spare 
we bought and had restored. I dont know how well it worked before it was 
(supposedly) serviced.

We still have our original cluster/speedo that was giving us grief, so 
I'll have a look at the wick condition of that one and see if it needs 
free-ing up before we yank the 'new' one out again!
