Re: Overheated coil

My first thought was do you still have a ballast resistor and is it wired up correctly. But since you mentioned voltage regulator, yes it could be sticking or adjusted wrong and overcharging. They do recommend you use an electronic regulator with electronic ignition. Make sure you don't use the one from Mopar Performance, it's for racing only and never shuts off. The one you want is a Wells VR706 from Auto Zone, $14.99. It has the added bonus of getting rid of the flickering headlights too.

I replaced it but still does it. Everything I've read points to the voltage regulator putting out too much. I know I adjusted a couple of years ago and put in electronic ignition last year. Would having an old style regulator rather than electronic cause problems?

The last three times I have been out on the road more than 30 minutes the coil has superheated causing the ignition to fail. It turns over but no spark. If I wait an hour it starts up. Any suggestions as to why this in now happening?
