Re: Overheated coil

I think you have to run an elec. regulator with the elec. ignition setup. The old "points-style" regulator wont work properly. Do you have an charging gauge? What does it read? Is it charging all the time? You could temporarily disconnect the alternator, drive for a while, and see if the problem reoccurs. (Make sure you have a fully charged battery when you do this, or you may run out of juice before the test is over).

Just some thoughts...

I replaced it but still does it. Everything I've read points to the voltage regulator putting out too much. I know I adjusted a couple of years ago and put in electronic ignition last year. Would having an old style regulator rather than electronic cause problems?

The last three times I have been out on the road more than 30 minutes the coil has superheated causing the ignition to fail. It turns over but no spark. If I wait an hour it starts up. Any suggestions as to why this in now happening?
