Re: {Chrysler 300} Undercoating

My dad was a Chrysler Plymouth dealer beginning 1960 in northern Wisconsin.  All cars that he ordered for dealer stock were ordered with factory undercoating and all customers who placed a factory order were encouraged to also order factory undercoating.  At the time, the factory undercoating option only cost around $14.00.  It was not ordered for rust protection, instead, cars with undercoating were quieter with noticeably less road noise.  Later on, some companies offering aftermarket undercoating emphasized the rust protection aspect as the primary reason..

Best regards, Jim

I don’t disagree. However many of mine are originals, all with original undercoating. The 3M spray cans of this work well to touch up areas disturbed by repairs. When I did my 61 Plymouth over I used no undercoat. If I had bought them new I would have refused undercoat. For as long as car salesman have crawled the surface of the earth they have strong armed buyers into undercoating, floor mats, snow tires and simonizing. Today its ceramic coatings. Before that scotch guard on the upholstery.   There’s always something…

I think that stuff is bad , factory or not . Many 300 I have dealt with  ( and Mercedes fancy rubber anti rust) are solid rust on top of the often difficult to get off undercoating . It only adheres in spots .  Looking back over the years , best antirust  thing is find low place with water in the floor drops while restoring and drill a 1/4 hole there . Maybe cement stainless washer around it from underside , attached with 6:32 brass or stainless screw . Then paint heavy with rustoleum . Rusty Jones  all that stuff was just a $ ripoff .

Keeping water out also means keeping water in , sitting under constantly wet rug padding on the other side.. the real problem .

Hello, everyone:

Was undercoating a dealer option in 1959? Found two layers of the stuff under my E.
