I tow a lot of vehicles and I only strap down the wheels. When you do it this way the car move freely on it's suspension and you have a comfortable ride. Strap or chain in the frame or crossmembers the car will jerk and pull and put a lot more stress on tie downs, straps and the car itself. After I have put a car on the trailer I have it tied down and ready to go in five minutes.

Take time and see how the professional car haulers tie down their loads to get some pointers. A winch will never replace proper straps or chains, it's only a mechanical clutch that holds it and can break any time down the road. It would be a shame to see a once great Brute sitting in a ditch behind the trailer. You can leave it hooked to the car but always winch out enough for the car to move around after you have tied it down.

  I've pulled cars in 5-6 different trailers, open and closed, through the
  years.

  I have ALWAYS used a 4-point auto tie-down set.
  Last time I purchased a set online (when I towed my E from TX to AZ). When I
  got there one of the buckles had bent. Make sure you buy a HD set!

  Also make sure your D-rings on the floor are reinforced. Many standard
  trailer setups are more for pulling Corvettes or Cudas and other
  intermediate cars.

  I always suggest NO PARKING BRAKE. Why put the stress there? Also you must
  tie down in neutral, brake off, so that all 4 ties have even pressure. I
  have seen many people have the brake on or in gear and front is tighter than
  rear, or vice versa.

  I have never used a winch, but if you believe it will hold the front tight,
  maybe two ties in the rear would suffice. Always cross the rear ties that
  are of course wrapped around opposite sides of the rear axle. 

  Last suggestion, makes sure all four trailer tires are < 5 years old. They
  will blow out from sitting/dry rot even when they are visually very nice.

  I want to thank everyone who responded to my trailer e-mail last week.
  The trailer, although a little tight, should work out fine.

  I want to set up a winch system at the front of the trailer (to avoid
  the gymnastic act of getting out of my car.) I started to do the
  research into proper winch sizes, mounting, etc and realized I'm most
  likely reinventing the wheel here. If someone has a setup they are happy
  with and could forward information it would be very much appreciated.

  A general tow question. When you transport your car in the trailer, do
  most people tie down from the rear axle and front sub-frame? 

  Also, do you engage the parking brake? Thinking about winching the car
  into the trailer I'm wondering about how to accomplish this without a
  squeeze along side of the car and a cane to push the pedal.

  Thanks in advance. Hope to show off the completed G and trailer in St.
  Charles!
