Electric winches have a low duty cycle. They overheat fast. A winch for your application rated at 8000 lbs from my experiences with intermittant use should be fine. A 6000 lbs winch can be double lined with a sheave and hook for about 2X pull which cuts speed by 1/2. My open trailer Warn winch is receiver mounted so it's use can be extended to another vehicle, front or rear, that has a receiver hitch properly mounted. Closed trailers have optional side doors which work well for big car loading. Tie downs are used by the pros, always, front and rear with no dependance on the winch cable. Always question a 'professional' that is not double securing on the front, winch cable end of your tow. Connections most used are to the frame back under the front of the car, aft of the front wheels (car facing forward). Hooks and straps or reinforced special purpose axle straps and ratchet straps to the axle are what is used most for securing the rear. Basket wheel/tire tiedowns work well and is what is used with rental open tow trailers for instance but for an enclosed rig won't work with a big car (?). I at least apply the park brake after the final 'set' of my tiedown system and most towers I have seen also engage park. Trailer loading should be heavy toward the front by 15-20% so front of car should be loaded toward front of trailer. Warren Anderson Sedona,AZ I want to thank everyone who responded to my trailer e-mail last week. The trailer, although a little tight, should work out fine. I want to set up a winch system at the front of the trailer (to avoid the gymnastic act of getting out of my car.) I started to do the research into proper winch sizes, mounting, etc and realized I'm most likely reinventing the wheel here. If someone has a setup they are happy with and could forward information it would be very much appreciated. A general tow question. When you transport your car in the trailer, do most people tie down from the rear axle and front sub-frame? Also, do you engage the parking brake? Thinking about winching the car into the trailer I'm wondering about how to accomplish this without a squeeze along side of the car and a cane to push the pedal. Thanks in advance. Hope to show off the completed G and trailer in St. Charles!
