A couple of years ago when I took a clock repair class, one of the first things we were taught was to make a detailed sketch of the clock's workings. Once it was apart, it would be very difficult to reassemble unless you were an advanced clock repairer. This was the best lesson I received and I believe it can be applied to an automobile as well. Looking at a picture of an engine, even an exploded view, cannot replace the learning you receive from actually sketching it yourself as you disassemble it. When it comes time to reassemble, the experience of sketching the parts you disassembled, and using the sketch as a guide will be very valuable. Good luck.
