If you look at the credits, you'll find "Cars provided by Chrysler
Corp". The big 3 had stables of cars which were lent to the studios for
the featured car scenes. Cheap advertising!
Of course the lending studio supplied other brands also, and these were
the ones that were wrecked, usually.
Don't know if the pratice is still in use, but there is many "Product
placements" in special scenes. You know they paid if the brand name is
prominently displayed.
