Well, I suppose a points system CAN "catastrophically fail." When a car's
been sitting for a long time, for example, it may not start without some
tinkering with the points. Also the condenser can fail without warning.
I'd score the reliability of an EI system higher than a fuel pump, fuel filter, U-joints, water pump, carburetor and a lot of other engine components. Sure, you can take a spare everything along on a long trip, sort of like carrying an umbrella so it doesn't rain. --Roger van Hoy, Washougal, WA, '55 DeSoto, '58 DeSoto, '56 Plymouth, '66 Plymouth, '41 Dodge ----- Original Message ----- From: "eastern sierra Adj Services" <esierraadj@xxxxxxxxx> To: <L-FORWARDLOOK@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, April 28, 2007 6:31 PM Subject: Re: [FWDLK] dual points or electronic? I've got nine messages, saved, on the subject of electronic ignition systems (versus points- system). The gist of the comparative analysis seems to be : E.I. will operate flawlessly, and maintenance-freely, and provide better mileage and performance, than a Points-ignition system, but can/will fail without any warning (and at the worst-possible moment), whereas a Point-system will perform OK, but will operate progressively-worse, but should not catastrophically fail. There also does not appear to be any practical way to test the operating-health of an E.I. system. Is that about it?
