I put 60 Plymouth brake drums on my 57 Plymouth. All right hand sides so no more left hand thread and no more lug bolts. This also gave me the opportunity to put mag wheels on it since I am not stuck with a steel wheel that accepts the lug bolts.

something I haven’t thought of for years and years. I know
I dealt with them in my life on something other than my
VW’s but what and when ….. I had a 50 Dodge, 53
Plymouth, 57 Plymouth and later Mopars but I don’t seem to
recall any of them having bolts albeit we are going back
some to like 1958 here.
And I worked on so many other cars
through the years that it is difficult to recall. That said
I do recall that Chrysler Corp cars did indeed have bolts
and locating pins at some long ago point but I am thinking
more like the 40’s. I had a buddy who had 1941 Plymouth
coupe that I spent a lot of time working on and that may
well have been my main experience with bolted wheels. I
really can’t be positive about the 50 Dodge or the 53
Plymouth either but I had the wheels and brakes drums off
that one several times in the near 5 years we had it and
think (if I can still actually think) I would have recalled
if it had them.
So far as DeSoto and Plymouth having
bolts after Chrysler and Dodge had bolts I would doubt that,
Maybe Plymouth as it had several brand exclusive pieces due
to its smaller size but the DeSoto was generally a
Chrysler/Dodge parts bin car for most, if not all, of the
more mundane pieces. Yes they did have their own styling
cues as necessary for product recognition and some
exclusivity in the engine department but other than that, at
least in the post-war years …….
PS; That 1941 Plymouth coupe had a
1955 Chrysler 300 under the hood albeit the previous motors
owner had kept the dual quad setup. My buddy found a New
Yorker/Imperial four barrel manifold and carb for it. Still
it was a quick street machine back in the early

Mopar? From my experience the
‘50’s Dodges I’ve worked on had lug nuts, the DeSotos
and Plymouths had lug bolts and a guide pin. The studs and
lug nuts are a lot easier to put a wheel on, don’t know
why they ever used lug bolts. Never seen a car
with mixed drums; if someone has that setup maybe some drums
were switched or possibly the whole axle.
