At this point, with all the fraud warnings and
such that have been passed around (on the net, on TV news stories,
etc...) the past year or so, I tend to place a great deal of the blame on
the people who just go around giving out their personal information when a spoof
e-mail shows up. Sure some of them can be convincing, but to me, an e-mail
asking for your user id and password would be like a "credit card company"
calling up my house and asking me to confirm my credit card number...that would
never happen (me giving out the number that is). If there's ever a doubt
to its authenticity, just mouse over the links in the e-mail. While some
of them will lead to legitimate pages, the one you're supposed to click to
log-in will have a much different address than the rest of the links or than any
other eBay pages.
That being said, the amount of fradulent postings
I've seen lately is getting rediculous...luckily for eBay and its users, there
are groups of people like us around that can smell a rat and report it before
things hopefully get too out of hand.

The
reason they get away with it is that nobody cares about us little guys. If it
were eBay?s money, they would jump on it with both feet. If it were government
money, they would send cops. If it were big business money, they would hire
detectives and lawyers. Ebay?s only obligation is to eliminate identified
scams from their system. They don?t want to advertise to beware of scams too
much, because it might scare away transactions, and that is how they make
their money. For us, it is caveat emptor.
A
large percentage of these scams originate outside the USA. The recent one on
the DeSoto originated in Saudi Arabia. They try to trick people into sending
money or their account passwords, so they can access your eBay account, PayPal
funds, or credit cards. Scams is the third largest industry in Nigeria. It is
common all over the world. What do third world governments care about American
citizens losing a few bucks? It is good income for their own economies! They
like to pick on Americans because they think we have unlimited cash and many
have been so protected for so long, we have forgotten to be wary.

I had a new one
happen to me yesterday,I just sold two 1972 Dodge Demon 340s on ebay and I got
a call ( I had my phone number in the listing for questions) from on of
the losing bidders, someone emailed him offering him a second chance offer
requesting money,it wasn't me.I told him to be careful it was a scam and as
far as I knew I had already had contact with the winning bidder and everything
was going as planned. These scumbags will do anything to try to screw someone
out of money.
