The first of two weather stories I can relate did not involve a FL car..I was enroute to CA from WI, driving a 65 Chevyvan, which was a old Sears service vehicle. It got about 5 gallons of oil to the tankful. The carb got clogged in Nebraska and I pulled off the Interstate. I had just finished field-stripping and repairing it when a summer storm hit. I wisely chose not to drive until it blew over. After some strong winds and about 6" of marble-size hail, I was able to continue on. The Mopar-related story goes back to 1962 or so, when our NY-based family ventured out on our annual summer road trip. We were in our 59 Custom Suburban 9 passenger, packed to the gills with 5 kids, custom-made roof rack, etc. I would have been 6. On our way across South Dakota, a tornado touched down southwest of us. We all saw it, but only my Dad probably realised the true danger. I remember being fascinated by the sight...As I learned much later, my dad tried to outrun it, which is usually not possible. I remember the car rocking so bad that he couldn't keep it on a straight line. Finally I think we just pulled over, and the funnel passed us by.
