392 belt installation

Keith,

I read and re-read your original question and found I had no sensible answer
for you. I have no idlers in my system and only two pairs of belts. One
set goes from engine to water pump to steering pump and back. The other,
the longer one, also goes from the engine. Its pulley has four grooves.
The inner two are for the water pump / steering pump belts. The outer two
have a larger diameter and hold the two belts that power the generator and
the A/C.

I could be that at some point your original smaller generator was replaced
with one that was intended for a car with A/C, and hence the double pulley.
Or that the second groove allows for the possible later installation of A/C.

I know you are trying to be as clear as possible in your description below
but what you mean by "air pump?" Does your car have A/C? I seem to recall
that it does not. These cars can be confusing because you could either get
them with no A/C, rear A/C only or rear and front A/C.

I am luckier than you in that I only need the two pairs of belts and where
they go is fairly obvious. I just hope I can find the longer pair that
drive the generator and A/C. I would need an idler of some kind to take the
A/C out of the loop, as it were, which seems like a lot more work than
trying to find the correct belts.

As to fitting the belts without removing the fan, I am more confident than
ever that it cannot be done. The smaller belt set is smaller in diameter
than the large five bladed fan is wide. Then there is the complicating
factor that the blades drop below the level of the fan shroud at the bottom.
Each blade has a semi-circular cut out at the end to allow it to avoid the
shroud. The gap between the blades and the shroud is very small, even
smaller than the gap between the fan clutch and the radiator, which will not
allow for much more than a pencil to pass between them. I cannot imagine
how one might work the four belts down below the blade at the bottom then
run it through the tiny gap created by the cut-out on the blade without
having arms that are significantly longer than those provided to the chubby,
middle aged, bad tempered guy who is obliged to perform the task. Even the
most gentle of elongated individuals is likely to damage at least one of the
belts in the process, not to mention the fan, the shroud and the clutch.

It's at times like these that one must seriously contemplate the Imperial
and the 392 Hemi as not being exactly a match made in heaven. The only
thing I am aware of that is easy to reach is frustration.

Hugh
