392 belt numbers

Alex,

Please tell me you kept the numbers.  Mine broke and fell off, so I no longer have them.  You did keep the numbers for future reference, right?  I mean, you did not post this message to make me go, "ARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!" did you?

Incidentally, I tried what you did myself at both NAPA and Autozone last year.  I came up with the shorter pair of belts but the longer ones that drive the A/C and generator eluded me.

Using the Goodyear numbers from Mikey and the Gates numbers from Andy Bernbaum, the good folks at NAPA have been able to order me what I hope will turn out to be the right belts.  I won't be able to get them until Saturday.

I have already advised my wife and child to be out of the house on Sunday when I try to fit them.  Removing the fan from this vintage of Imperial is a tricky business.  Replacing it without damaging the radiator is even trickier.

I have a shard of the original longer belt, so I know the width.  I may be obliged to measure the required length of the belt with some string in order to get the right replacement.  What a joke.  Just because the engine was discontinued 44 years ago, as has been discussed somewhat exhaustedly here of late from an impractical, academic point of view, I don't see why I cannot simply just walk into any car parts place and find them in abundance on the shelf.  I mean, where is the logic in their unavailability?  Don't us folks with all original Imperials count for anything, even though we are an absolutely microscopic fraction of the general public and even old car hobbyists?  What has the world come to?

Hugh

When I restored my 57' I had saved all the belts and took them to my local NAPA dealer and he matched them up simply by measuring them. This worked out great. I believe they subtracted about 1 inch from each belt due to the old ones being stretched. Alex
