No, the
electronic ignition was required only in the “non-compliance areas”
of California in those years, which were
basically LA and surrounding cities like Pasadena
and the San Fernando Valley (Burbank, Glendale, Van Nuys etc.).
Our local area had very poor scavenging of the smog components due to the
physical situation (a ring of mountains around the city).
LA was called the
“VALLEY OF SMOKES” by the original
inhabitants –and the reason is strictly physical – the air can’t
get out of the valley in most weather conditions!
I confess I
never heard of “Albany” or “Lafayette” in California,
so I don’t know if they were included in the non-compliance areas as
listed by the AQMD – but I doubt it very much. As I said, cars sold
in most of the state would not have had the clean air package until much later
years.

- Electronic Ignition?
Hi Dick,
Our 1970 Chrysler
300 Convertible has points and not electronic ignition which I wish it had. It
is a California car and was sold 1-13-70 by
the Chrysler Dealer in Albany,
CA. It has the Fuel Tank
(E.C.S.)Evaporation Control System. We bought it from the original owner July
3, 1986 at Lafayette, CA.. seems that it should have had the
electronic ignition.
Thanks for the
information below

You
guys are embarrassing me – I’ve been very quiet the last few months
– so it isn’t like I’m in there pitching every day!
There
was one thing I thought might have been of interest – it was regarding
the points/vs electronic ignition discussion. I posted the following (or
tried to - twice) about 2 weeks ago – so here it is again, to test
whether or not you can hear me!
I sent this
in before, but it did not come through for some reason.
No one is
"wrong" on this - it depends on where the car was sold originally.
Starting in
model year 1969, Chrysler Corp provided electronic ignition on cars sold in
"clean air program" areas - which includes many areas of California. Our
company cars were Chryslers in 1969, and since we were in Los Angeles (smog capital of the world in the
late 60s) the cars were equipped with it. It may have been an option in other
areas - I don't know.
We had an
office on Imperial Boulevard
- (mandatory Imperial content).
