What you did is fine. Unless you want to turn up the volume full blast, 4 ohm speakers won't hurt the 8 ohm impedance in the system. The main reason for this is that a lot of older radios used transformers as output stages, so there is good isolation from the transistor (or tube in the older models) amplifier stage.
