The factory set up for the electric choke on one of my FMC cars is to power it via the oil pressure sending unit. The sender for this has three prongs. When that failed to work at one point, I powered it temporarily as I described earlier via the coil.
Interestingly, I had to adjust the choke spring tighter during that time. This kept it from opening too soon and causing the car to run crummy during warm up. Once I resolved the other trouble, I found I could set it back to the original spot and it worked fine again.
I have to agree, that I prefer an electric choke to the one using engine heat to activate. I have also seen one activated by hot water.

It was suggested to me by one member to use an Edelbrock 1406 as a replacement for my Carter AFB. Since this carb uses an electric choke and the Carter is manual, what would be the source of power for the electric choke? Could I just use an E-1405 with manual choke?
I have a "new" Carter AFB with an electric choke on my '71 Imperial (it's almost identical to the 1406). I ran the wire for the electric choke to the hot side of the ballast resistor, so it only gets electricity when the ignition is on.
The electric choke definitely functions better than the manual choke. I recommend it.
