RE: IML: backfiring, missing

Backfiring under load is the result of 1 of 2 possible causes if the engine runs well otherwise. First cause is insufficient spark strength to fire the mixture reliably, check the coil, points and condenser. Coils can act up hot while behaving perfectly when cold. Second cause is a lean condition, usually carb related rather than a vacuum leak which will raise hell at idle rather than at low vacuum levels experienced while accelerating. Check your fuel pump for sufficient pressure and volume, check your fuel filter

Then if all else fails check the carburetor for plugged jets or a low float level.  Hope this helps, good luck!

Hello all,

I need the help of the Imperial tech's.  My 63 just started to backfire and/or miss on when I excel.  When it's cold it seems to run fine but once it warms up it runs a little rough and gets that backfiring and lurching action.  I checked the spark plugs, they seem fine.  This is driving me nuts and I'm sure it's driving other people nuts to listen to a beautiful car make such bad noises.
