Re: IML: backfiring, missing

Good morning,
Backfiring is usually caused by a lean fuel condition. Vacuum lines off or leaking would be a good place to start. Make sure your accelerator pump is giving a good squirt of gas when you open the throttle. Check this with the engine off-remove the air cleaner and watch down the front two barrels of the carburetor when you open the throttle. There should be two pretty good streams of fuel shooting into the carb. Since the engine runs fine cold (choke is on then and gives the engine a little richer mixture) chances are ignition isn't the issue as temperature wouldn't have a bearing. If your engine idle is higher than normal when the engine is warmed up, that is also a good sign of a vacuum leak which of course would lead to a lean fuel condition. Good luck.

Subject: IML: backfiring, missing

Hello all,

I need the help of the Imperial tech's.  My 63 just started to backfire and/or miss on when I excel.  When it's cold it seems to run fine but once it warms up it runs a little rough and gets that backfiring and lurching action.  I checked the spark plugs, they seem fine.  This is driving me nuts and I'm sure it's driving other people nuts to listen to a beautiful car make such bad noises.
