IML: re: Weighing the Lady (Lucille, that is)

No Rob, it's a weight-based added on (one more time!) fee.... I quote verbatim from the green "VEHICLE SPECIAL NOTICE" received in the mail:
******************************************************************************************
"We are unable to tell you what your license tab renewal fee will be without knowing the weight of your vehicle. Effective with January 1, 2006 registration expirations, we are required to charge a license tab fee of $30.00 plus a weight based fee. We have tried to find the weight of your vehicle but were unsuccessful and need you to provide documentation showing the weight of your vehicle.

You may find this information form a variety of sources, to include:
  * The owner.s manual for this vehicle.
  * A previous title or registration for this vehicle showing the vehicle weight.
  * A nationally accepted vehicle value guide (such as Kelley Blue Book or NADA).
  * The vehicle manufacturer web site showing the weight of your vehicle.

If you can't find the weight of your vehicle from the above sources, you may take your vehicle to a business with a certified scale and have it weighed. If you choose this option, a weight slip must be provided when renewing your registration.

To renew:
  1. Use the chart below to find your vehicle weight fee
  2. Add the weight fee and the Amount Due (shown above), and
  3. Provide a copy of the required weight documentation from any of the sources listed above (in paragraph 2)

                             Weight in pounds       Weight fee
                             0 to 4000                      $10.00
                             4001 ot 6000                 $20.00
                             6001 to 8000                 $30.00
                             8001 to 10,000              $32.00
**********************************************************************************************
FWIW - even though they quote the tab fee as being $30.00, the "amount due" is $33.75. There is NO mention of what the extra $3.75 is for, however - must be starbucks for the clerical dept. Typical of these parasites!!!

I am still ticked at having to pay nearly a thousand bucks to transfer the title on an 8 year old one ton flatbed truck. I wonder if they are taxing babies yet....

I'm sure that they want to tax you based on weight. It's probably an "SUV tax".
I would go for the lowest documented weight. IF you can find the dry weight
somewhere, use that. I think somebody posted 4,770. My cars
all have weights on the title. I didn't provide any of them and I'm sure
they are well below actual weight if I threw the car on the scales. For
instance, '70 'cuda 3,600 lbs, '83 Imperial 3750 lbs.

Good luck.
