When building the enigine, it's important to get the right cam. I
got mine from Mopar Peformance. It's a low lift short duration
"RV/Competition" cam. This will give you nice low end torque. I also
used Keith Black .020 over hypereutectic pistons, not extremely easy to
find, but Summit Racing probably has 'em. As long as you got the right
components, you'll get the right results.?
?
Finding the right machine shop is of paramount importance. I found a
great one here in southern California, Evans Speed Shop in El Monte.
They're pricey, but do great work. Besides, machine work is not
something you can just redo. Once it's done right, you shouldn't have
to worry about it for a hundred thousand miles. Don't forget to have
the valve seats hardened to allow you to use unleaded gas with no
worries.?
?
In essence, a low lift cam is the way to go for bottom end power.
Whatever cam you use, you have to find an intake manifold to match it
well, and of course, a carb to match. I used a rebuilt Carter, I think
it's 650CFM, but you can probably go a little higher, I think I might
go up to 750CFM.?
?
Ultimately, take your time building it, be VERY detail oriented, and
you should get a sound engine that'll get you up to 65 in a hurry for a
long time.?
?
Good Luck. If you like, you can ask me off list any other questions.?

John,?
I am a gearhead want-to-be. Please tell me what "specs" you built to.
That?
sounds like what I really want. I have put the elderbrock performer
cam, intake,?
and carb with HO 440 heads on my 413 block, but I have never gotten it
"right".?
I did not rebuilt the low end so the 440 block is very doable.?
Thanks,?

I pulled my spent 413 and found a 440 with a steel crank, rebuilt it
to
my?
specs (all low end torque, 9.5 compression), and I love it. Only
the most?
learned gearhead can tell it's a 440 by the stamping on the
top of
the?
block. I know the purists will think me foolish, but I like
driving my car,?
and I like driveablitly. I know they'll say a 413 will
perform
just as well?
as a 440. Perhaps, but not a 440 built to my
specs. It's not a hot
rod?
engine, but when I want to pass someone, I
feel justified in what
I?
did.

Just my two cents (that's about what it's worth!)
John

with Pete?

undertand if
you're a purist because I can be that way too, but
I'd give?
myself a
break in that regard before I'd trade out a motor. I

are
wonderful engines.?
?
Patrick in LA (and no, that's not

Reply-To: mailing-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx?
Hey all you mechanical?
experts,?
?
What would one need to do to change out the 413 in
a 64 Crown?
to a?
440? What things would need to change/be replaced etc. I am
not?
asking?
this because I am contemplating doing it, on the contrary,
I am?
thinking?
about undoing it. A previous owner did this to my
car, and I?
am
wondering?
what it would take to undo this and put a 413
back in.?
Would I need to?
replace all my accessories like the alternator,
AC?
compressor, starter?
etc? How about the radiator? Would it just be
a matter?
of pulling out
the?
440 and dropping in the 413, or would I
need new?
motor mounts (I may
need?
them anyway). How about the
transmission,?
would anything need to be?
changed there??
?
Thanks for
your?
input,?
?
Mark Elliott?
64 Crown 4 door (currently with a
