Well, now you mention the static...

If you can't get the spray to work, you still may end up having to look for a good radio repairman. Sometimes the control can be "self-cleaned" by rotating the knob fully a few times. This can help the "sweeper" to knock the dirt off the resistence coils of the potentiometer.
