I was the state wide domestic rodent control biologist for the state of California for many years and now retired and live in Ashland, Oregon. If there is no food, the rodents will not be attracted to your storage place. There can be no food within a couple hundred feet of the building so watch for food crops near by. All animals need food, cover and water to survive. Eliminate one or more and you control them. To eliminate them during removal of the food use snap traps between the food source and their nesting area. If you use an anticoagulant like Decon they take a few days to bleed to death (usually internally) and then it is in an inaccessible places like inside walls or inside the seat of your Imperial- so use rat snap traps for rats and mouse traps for mice. If you use a mouse trap on a rat they learn after one slap on the nose not to go near any trap again. A rat trap for a mouse will often times just get the tail and then a trap shy mouse. During this time of year the rodents (including house mice) will try to find a suitable place for the winter-- with food, cover and nesting material. You can spread a powder such as flower (lightly) around the food source to see tracks to determine what the critter is using the food. Pet food has always been the primary source of domestic rodent food. I have stored my cars in a chicken coup for the last 25 years and have not had any damage. But, there is no food any where around. Good luck.
