Square Bore Vs. Spread Bore

Hello All;
  This seams like a stupid question but is there a way, in theory, to
convert a square bore carberetor into a spread bore? I am just thinking on
my feet here but could the air flow through the primaries of a square bore
be restricted to achieve a similar effect to a spread bore? Would it make a
difference?
