I feel as though I must demur from the prevalent opinion. The book you
refer to shows a 1957 engine. The valve covers say "FIREPOWER," not
"IMPERIAL." I think the "IMPERIAL" stamping is a one year only feature for
1958 and one could reasonably conclude, lacking much in the way of evidence,
that the wire covers were different for 1958 as well. You'll also notice
both the fuel pump and the exhaust manifolds are also painted pretty for the
picture. My engine came with a glass bowl filter fuel pump which it would
be senseless to paint.
This poor old horse is long, long dead, so beating it is beyond reductive.
All I can say is the paint that was on my wire covers was silver, and it
appeared to be the original paint, as a repaint over it, also of silver, had
peeled badly. I am not sure of a way to definitively answer the question.
It is my ever so humble opinion that they looks better in silver.
