Jay, are you saying you have to lengthen the rod so far that it hits the firewall?  Or are you saying it hits the firewall just as installed?

 

If the former, try adjusting the kickdown band.

 

If the latter, Lokar makes a great aftermarket kickdown.  It does not look stock in the least, being a braided metal cable housing as opposed to a rod, but it works great.  If you buy it, be sure to mention your carb model number and buy the accompanying bracket.
