Re: IML: oil - synt vs. SAE

I had a 66 Newport (383 2bbl) from 1994 to 2004 and ran nothing but Synthitic oil in it. I changed the oil once a year whether the miles warranted it or not. I believe that I usually ran 20W/50 Mobil 1. I feel that synthetic oil is even more important for "classic" car today since they probably get driven less frequently and sit for longer periods between use. Typically the synthetic oils have a more aggressive additives package than the conventional oils.

There is a separate controversey on what constitutes synthetic oil.Castrol was sued by Mobil recently because Castrol stopped using "synthetic" oil. The judge in the case said the "synthetic" was whatever you wanted to call it. After this caseMobil backed away from 100% synthetic in thier new "tri" blend.

I strongly believe that real synthetic oil is worth the relatively small additional extra cost and use it in all my vehicles exclusively.

Hi All....I was wondering, and I may be opening
a can of worms here, no pun intended, regarding
synthetic oil vs. regular (SAE type) oil in our
Imperials.
I have heard various comments/rumors about how,
if you have used synthetic oil in a motor, you
CANNOT go back to regular oil and visa versa as
well. Then again, I heard that if you use any
synth oil EXCEPT MOBIL 1, this was still the
case but NOT with Mobil 1....is there REALLY a
big difference, in an older or a rebuilt, or
even a newer motor, if you use synth or just a
good SAE oil ??( as long as you change whatever
oil you are using every few thousand miles or
so) ...and then, what about these 'additives'
like Amsoil and such? anyone have any first had
experience with any of these?
If I am bringing up something that was
discussed and beaten to death here some time
ago I apologize for missing it and ask any
comments to just be directed directly to me
(dansgarage@xxxxxxxxxxxx) so as to not bore the
rest of the IML list with info they have
already heard before.
Thanks all!
Dan melnik
