Assuming you have a stock ignition set up, one cause that I have not heard
mentioned, is the distributor condenser. If this is bad it will cause
serious backfiring, loss of power to the extent that you will have
difficulty driving the car. It is an easy item to replace and something
that is frequently overlooked because failure is rare.
