That's the same one as this:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=49992&posts=13&highlight=desoto convertible&highlightmode=1#M415727

Same photos and everything - I wonder what happened? something doesn't smell right here!

Luckily, you can still buy a grille for a 1958 De Soto at the hardware store!

For 99,99% of the worlds population (myself included) this car looks just like yours, Doc. As near as to the front would'nt that qualify the sweep as a DeSoto?

Well, that's the point, exactly ...

It is a hybrid car, and it is 80% Dodge, so if we want to call for majority ....

But to be clear, these are FIRESWEEPS, just as Diplomats are an animal unto themselves. For whatever
goofy reason they made these mix-n-match cars, they are different/special/whatever we want to see them
as, but they aren't regular DeSotos, or Dodges, or Plymouths.

If a Canadian market car is worthy of note for being a special built assemblage of parts, why aren't these
worthy of note for being the same special kind of cars ?

I for one have always been interested in the name 'Firesweep'. I've come to realize it must have its roots in some ancient language none of us can fathom. Let's try the old trick of breaking the name down into pieces:

Fi - no real meaning re - also no real meaning swe - again, no real meaning ep - no meaning.

I can only conclude that the meaning of this name will be forever lost to the ages. Unless someone discovers an old shop manual, perhaps.

Question: The 1958 DeSoto Firesweep used a wedge 350 engine. The 1958 Chrysler Windsor, also on the short wheelbase with dodge based fenders and hood ..... - what engine was in that?

All respect to my friend the Doc (a better authority than I on all things De Soto), but a Firesweep is every bit as much a De Soto as the lwb cars. The NDC makes no distinction. I am a Dodge man to my core - but "these, sir, are no Dodges," in the words of the late great Lloyd Benston. Let's cut them neither up nor down.

My point being, if this was in fact sold for $27,500 - as the last thread claimed - why in the wide, wide world of sports is it on the block again? ...at the very same auction company!

by the way, Wayne - the reclining top looks legit to me.

It derives from "chimney sweep"

So, by this logic, an Adventurer is a Fireflite is a Firedome is a Firesweep. They're all just DeSotos
and there is no point in differentiating between them, even if the Firesweep is 80% Dodge. Afterall,
an Adventurer is just a Fireflite with dual quads, a brown interior, and a different trim additions and
deletions, and a Firedome is just a Fireflite with a Firesweep interior and fender trim, right ?

So, by Brent's logic, an adopted child is not the parent's child, either; it is a "hybrid" child.

A Firesweep is a model of the DeSoto brand of cars.

Get over it.

You are so right, instead of discussing DeSoton conv, condition, price, etc., will this one every time.

LWB DeSoto is a "hybrid" Chrysler then..

Does anybody know which model this Norwegian '58 conv is?? I don't know. If it's a Sweep, one can recognize it as a DESOTO by reading letters above the lic plate recess.

Anybody here who know why it is for sale again?

Should be the 354. No B-Block engines in Chryslers until '59.

It still is a Desoto body, Desoto nameplate, and a Desoto Dash....I consider it more of a Desoto than say...a Canadian based Dodge, which was almost all Plymouth, including the dash, body, and engine.

LWB DeSoto is a "hybrid" Chrysler then..

===============================================

History shows that the 126" WB 57 DeSoto-Chrysler design came out of the DESOTO studio and
overruled the design put forth by the Chrysler team. So, the reality is that the Chrysler is an adapted
DESOTO design, not the other way around.

From there, it got twisted into all sorts of conglomerations.

I guess I see this from the perspective of BUILDING a car from parts. If we took a Firesweep apart
put all the DeSoto parts on a list and the Dodge parts on another, the Dodge list would be nearly 10x
as long as that of the Desoto parts.

The ENTIRE frame, chassis, and engine are Dodge, as well as 95% of the nose clip !

The Desoto body shell on 2 doors creates an illusion of the bulk of the car is DeSoto, however sedans
Dodge and wagons are "corporate".

I like Neil's example ... the Firesweep is like the adopted/foster kid. Part of the family, but distinctly
different, with a history all its own.

Do we have to go through this every month or so? It's all semantics. Chrysler Corp called it a DeSoto, and they called the Windsor a Chrysler, and they were sold in those respective dealerships. Enough already!!!

Ian, Morgan is correct: the '58 Windsor has the Chrysler poly 354, 2bbl standard, the '58 Saratoga came with the 4 bbl.

Back to the original baby blue car above (sharp!) it would be a bargain at 25-30k, that's for sure!

That car isn't a real FL because it's missing the fantastic roof. And 57-8 Chryslers are DeSoto designs. Ask John Samson. Firesweeps are DeSotos with Dodge frames and front clips, which are a happy mistake. I love my Firesweep and it's roof and mean looking fenders. Y'all should be so lucky.
