Aftermarket aluminum heads was probably the decision I struggled with the most on my build. I think most would say it is hard to argue against the gains over stock iron heads, but unfortunately I had a target budget. The good news was my donor motorhome 440 engine had 452s, so I opted to build the best bottom end factory block I could (at least that is my hope) and rework my 452s. I did manage to have enough budget left over for some port work and added the Hughes rockers. The trade-off in my mind was that it would be an option down the road (buying aftermarket heads) if indeed my short block assembly was holding its own.
Which in a way, sort of brings us back around to Don regarding the actual deck height question ... if you are pulling apart the block to replace the pistons and rods, a trip to the machine shop for decking would be a good call, as well, no?
Thank you,
Jim
