Re: LA block intermediate shaft install

I bought one of THESE from Summit:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-4792?seid=srese1&gclid=CPiTseL4gLoCFcuY4Aod7CkAnQ
Found a couple of things to improve: cut a groove down the threaded part of the bolt to release pressure and chucked it in a drill & rounded the tip to avoid damaging the piston.

Works GREAT! I noticed this one (also from Summit):
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pro-67581
already has the tip of the stop bolt rounded. I could feel the difference after grooving my bolt by blowing through it. Don't honestly know if compression would/could be a problem because the piston is coming up pretty slowly turning the crank by hand.
Just seemed like a good idea - and the Dremel was handy! :-D

There is also a tool: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pro-67581

You can also use an old spark plug to make one, as noted by Darwin. I'm to Leave a small area of the plug tool you make open so that air from the compression / exhaust stroke can escape.

There is a detailed discussion here:

Neal...you can make a piston stop from an old spark plug. Screw this into
#1 cylinder, turn the crank clockwise 'til #1 piston hits the stop, go
back around the other way until #1 hits the stop, and 1/2 way between
those 2 marks is TDC. Hopefully your balancer's TDC mark is the correct
  one.
Cheers.... Darwin/BC/Canada
