Re: 65 Coronet no longer charging well

Since the cost of the test was zero, I was going to splurge at NAPA and get both a new alternator and new voltage regulator which together seem to be less than $100, perhaps changing the regulator first to see what that does.  My service manual says the original alternator was rated at 35 amps, so I was going to get one of those.  The only significant power draw I can imagine this car has is the motor which moves the top.  Does that sound reasonable?  I am I going to run into any trouble with a NAPA voltage regulator replacing what's in there now?

The price of a new(rebuilt) alternator is probably less than the cost of the shop diagnoses of the problem, and yes there are several different amp models that will be a direct bolt on, do no get carried away  unless you know if the charging system has been updated to handle it,,,,

Thanks for the input everyone, including the emailed ones.  Today I took the Dodge to my local TireKing (which handles my Hondas) and had them test the charging system.  Their diagnosis was a failing alternator.  I'm going to study my service manual a bit and poke around with a voltmeter myself, but it seems a new alternator is my next project.

I have an aftermarket voltage gauge that has always read on the order of 14 volts.  Last week it started reading 11.  Today, I had a dead battery.  How can tell which of the components in this path are bad?  I'm guessing I have, as possible points of failure, the alternator, voltage regulator, some mysterious wiring issue, something else.  Could a bad battery cause this?  What steps should I take to narrow things down?  Any advice appreciated.
