Seeing as mention has been made of the use of upper cylinder lubricant and the need to protect the valve seats (valves are generally okay) in older engines, I will put in a bit of my experience.
First, valve seats that have gone on unmolested since they had run leaded fuel seem to have a protective coating on them that helps them to endure quite well. But they can't always remain unmolested and they are expensive to replace, so I used a tin catalyst in my car and it immediately arrested the valve seat erosion that threatened to force me to tear the head off again.
Claims are made for them regarding improving octane rating of the fuel, I don't know about that, but I do know that they effectively stop valve seat problems. They are also a once-only purchase (compared to upper cylinder lubricant), need scant attention and can be moved from car to car as desired.
They work for the purpose of preventing valve seat erosion.
