The split makes the tool more versatile. The clearance on some motors will not allow a complete circumference of the tube.

Mike, I got enough out of subseqent Posts and pics, to show me what
the missing text was saying. Good ideah! but why does the nut need to
be split? Cant you drill the hole big enough to just slip over the
dipstick tube? Thanks...................MO
