Sounds like it turned into a backyard mechanic's adventure.

I've only done a couple of sets of ball joints but I didn't have any
trouble with a good impact.  You have the most important part, the
correct socket.  Have you been soaking the threads with something like
Kroil Oil?

Let us know how the adventure ends.
