Re: Pertronix Equivalent

Hello,

I use the Igniter III distributor from Pertronix. I do not recommend
it, it is slightly larger and I had problems with the clearance
between it and the valve cover and head. I took a little metal off
and it now fits OK.

I did have one go bad, not complete failure but it was dropping
pulses. It was taken care of under warranty.

I have my battery in the trunk and I really did not see a place where
I wanted to mount an ignition box under the hood of my 63 Sport Fury.
I also wanted a rev limiter. This unit met all of my needs.

Personally I would like an original Ma Mopar unit but as I said I
didn't see a place where I wanted to mount it. I do have a mount,
forgot where I got it but it mounts the ignition module behind the
intake manifold on 2 of the 3 bolts that holds the bar down that holds
the valley pan down. It is in a location where it is not easily seen
but I decided not to use it.

Back to the problems, around town I am not concerned but I have had
the car on a couple of road trips. I have a box that goes in the
trunk with a standard single point distributor, coil, timing light and
a wiring diagram how to transfer back to points. I left the ballast
resistor on the firewall and just have a jumper on it. I can switch
very rapidly between distributors.

I know, the question is why would I put up with the Pertronix unit, I
just wanted a rev limiter, I have a 4-speed and I am willing to deal
with a unit that may not be perfect.
